My own understanding has changed through this course as a result of the readings, activities, and conversations because previous to this class I had a limited knowledge and understanding about any digital related learning or concepts. The article outlining the Framework as proposed by Hinrichsen and Coombs titled “The five resources of critical digital literacy: a framework for curriculum integration” has enhanced my understanding of what it means to critically engage with digital texts. From engaging with others in this course and the discussions I have participated in I have learned about different types of digital texts like professional blogs, academic research, social media platforms, and content from the College of Ontario Teachers. My understanding of what makes a digital text-critical has also changed as a result of the readings, activities and conversations in this course. The effectiveness of a text and the way in which it engages the reader critically is a concept I have come to understand more in participating in this course.
Some of the digital literacy skills I have acquired in this class is the discerning the effectiveness of a digital text or resource and the application within the classroom. The Digital rubric as define by Tony Vincent was one of the tools I acquired in this course. Looking at texts and finding the value of the content or application and usability of a certain platform in the classroom has been a skill that I have acquired. In addition, the five components of the Hinrichsen, Coombs framework are other skills I have acquired in this course. Through decoding, meaning making, using, analyzing and the persona are skills I have learned in this course.
When I have a classroom of my own I will begin by integrating digital texts and engaging platforms into my classroom for students to participate in and communicate with one another. Some resources may not catch on or be effective so the trial and error portion of testing material with students will be a starting point in my own classroom. I will also use the resources I have collected to create materials for my classroom like Canva or YouTube videos. As well using different social media platforms to stay connected with my future students.
Some skills that I hope to improve as a learner as a result of this course are to continue to build my online professional persona. By engaging with other educators and being a digital presence is a skill I hope to improve. I would also like to improve my knowledge of online resources and material that is available to teachers and critically analyzing these resources in conjuncture with their usability.
